Why Steam, someone asks….

Today someone posted Why do people rave about Steam? on reddit, and I decided to type out the canned answer I trot out in conversations to illustrate the idiocy of last century’s distribution model -

The concept of taking 1s & 0s, lasing them onto a metal wafer encased in a plastic disc, putting that in a plastic jewel case, putting that into a cardboard sleeve, putting the sleeve into a box with a crappy manual and some other bits of dead tree that simply get discarded, then SHRINK WRAPPING the whole shebang in plastic, stacking a few hundred of those onto a palette, loading those into a container, and shipping them across continents, oceans, borders, etc., so that they may simply sit on a store shelf and collect dust, well, this concept is kaput. It’s like giving the middle finger to the earth every time you want to get the 1’s & 0’s that could just as easily traverse the ether.

It’s 2010 people. Get with the program.

Forgot to post up the link to the final game, here it is:

Any comments appreciated; I think next time I’m going to try something with a more reliable physics setup – it proved frustrating for this game, and made it significantly harder to play for casual audiences.  Setup the logo for robocognito, the company I’m establishing for these personal ventures.   I think the latest project, a ‘quick tiny game before valentines’ may have blown up in my face.  So, what do you do?

I refer the audience to an episode of the outer limits, called “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”, in which William Shatner is menaced by a knit sea monkey muppet.

If Shatner can go from there to Star Trek, perhaps I shouldn’t get too down in the dumps.  Of course, I am no Shatner…. Hrmm.

SHEP screens

Some screenshots from another game project I’m working on, this is a fast-turn around concept I’m working on with Mr. Wallace – this is a game we made in a week called SHEP.

I’ve rarely had the opportunity to destroy an entire planet – gotta say, it’s pretty fun!

More screenshots & a link to the playable game soon!
