Why Steam, someone asks….

Today someone posted Why do people rave about Steam? on reddit, and I decided to type out the canned answer I trot out in conversations to illustrate the idiocy of last century’s distribution model -

The concept of taking 1s & 0s, lasing them onto a metal wafer encased in a plastic disc, putting that in a plastic jewel case, putting that into a cardboard sleeve, putting the sleeve into a box with a crappy manual and some other bits of dead tree that simply get discarded, then SHRINK WRAPPING the whole shebang in plastic, stacking a few hundred of those onto a palette, loading those into a container, and shipping them across continents, oceans, borders, etc., so that they may simply sit on a store shelf and collect dust, well, this concept is kaput. It’s like giving the middle finger to the earth every time you want to get the 1′s & 0′s that could just as easily traverse the ether.

It’s 2010 people. Get with the program.
